WHEN AND HOW DID YOUR LOVE OF PIN-UP GIRLS BEGIN?

When I was a kid my father ran, along with many other businesses, a cabaret that featured burlesque shows in San Frediano, Florence, Italy. I was only ten and unbeknownst to my parents, I would sneak in and watch the shows.  I was completely mesmerized by the women on stage. They were fun, flirtatious and sultry without being vulgar.  They danced… They winked.  They wore skimpy, shimmering costumes…yet they looked like the girl next door... I'd say growing up I had an enviable education.

WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS / INFLUENCES?

Norman Rockwell, Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, Grau, Federico Fellini, Botticelli, Bettie Page, Gina Lollobrigida, Marilyn Monroe and the charming, gregarious, beautiful women I have the fortune to meet on a daily basis.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR PROCESS?

I shoot in studio and then painstakingly elaborate each image in post production. Every image is a new fantasy for me.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST BIG PIN-UP PHOTO SHOOT...

Back in the 90s, I shot a pin-up calendar for a modeling agency in Milan, Italy. It was very successful. Since then I have worked with Vanity Fair, French Cosmopolitan, VH-1 and many many other magazines and venues.

TO WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE THE RECENT RESURGENCE AND APPRECIATION OF PIN-UP GIRLS?

Pin-up girls are inviting and non-threatening. Unfortunately today we are surrounded by what we perceive as threats on many fronts. We, whether male or female, like to be reassured that all is well. We can laugh and feel excited… attracted to something as desirable and sensual as a pin-up girl. They exude happiness and sexual confidence whether through a come hither wink of the eye or a playful, flirtatious lift of the shoulder. They make you feel as if you are their sole focus of attention.  Pin-up girls conduct a highly calibrated game of seduction - and they win. A very empowering nod to women.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD PIN-UP MODEL?

A woman with a great sense of humor. A woman who enjoys the art of seduction. A woman who feels very comfortable in her own skin. A woman with an excellent sense of body language. Yet, any women with a bit of fantasy can be a pin-up girl.

WHO IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE PIN-UP GIRL?

Marilyn Monroe. Her sex appeal was hypnotic. Light loved her. There has never been anyone quite like Marilyn Monroe.

WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU MOST LOVE TO TRANSFORM INTO A PIN-UP?

Several, however Dita Von Teese and Sophia Vergara come to mind.  Dita has that marvelous capacity to entice with the slightest tilt of the head, bend in the knee, lift of the chin. Less is really more with Dita. It is the subtlety in her movement that is captivating… also her deliberate aloofness that excites.  Sophia Vergara is our generation's Lucille Ball. She is warm, sensual and comical all at the same time. With Sophia she allows you to feel as if... you might just stand a chance.  She has an irresistible, I can be your buddy too attitude and we men fall for it every time.  Dita lets you know you are welcome to come into her feminine universe... but you are her guest and guests must leave at the bewitching hour. If Oprah and Ellen would like to pose for me, I would be thrilled. They are captivating. So why not?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A PIN-UP PHOTOGRAPHER WHO IS JUST STARTING OUT?

Go to the library. Check out  books on art, fashion or film that appeal to you.  Improve your vocabulary. Telling a girl to,"Look hot"or "Be sexy" is a big turn off… and you will get an awful contrived result.  Your job is to make your model feel beautiful and at ease.  Music... choose your music correctly for each model. Just because Heavy Metal turns you on does not mean it does the same for her. And lastly, try and assist a well respected photographer in your area. You will learn much from someone with years of experience behind the lens.
